About
Garissa University (GAU) is a government institution located in Garissa County. Established by an Act of Parliament and subsequently becoming a constituent college of Moi University in 2011, GaU transitioned into a fully-fledged University in 2017. With a current student enrollment of 3,500 across various academic programs, GaU serves as a beacon of hope for the predominantly illiterate population in the region. Its mandate extends beyond traditional education, aiming to bridge the education gap and foster socio-economic development in Northern KenyaAs the only chartered government university in arid Northern Kenya that covers 65% of the country’s land mass, GaU plays a pivotal role in providing affordable and quality higher education to students from the region and beyond. Given the challenges highlighted by statistics indicating high illiteracy rates of 60% and limited access to education in Northern Kenya, GaU’s commitment to open science and digitization aligns with its mission to expand educational opportunities and contribute to regional development. Through initiatives in open science and digitization, GaU seeks to enhance access to knowledge, foster training and research collaboration, and empower communities by leveraging digital technologies for education and socio-economic advancement.
